The Garden - A Year of Learning

Our garden started out so lovely this year, only to be ravaged by the insane wind here.  We ended up replanting two or three times until we finally got it to stay.  Then, it suffered from our neglect after so many trips away this summer.  Here is the report:

The successes:  many more berries this year, lots of jam!  Also many tomatoes for homemade spaghetti sauce and delicious basil for pesto.  Yum.

The failures:  Green beans that were not a good variety - we planted pole beans this year and we found them to be too mushy and stringy...plus, I planted way too many (after many wind ravagings) and so the bean teepees fell over.  Our zucchini, spaghetti squash, watermelon, and yellow squash were destroyed by nasty little squash bugs.  Again, if we had been here and more diligent with their destruction, our plants might have thrived. 

All in all, a learning year.  It was fun to expand the garden by three more grow boxes, and we'll probably keep it at that until we can prove our dedication to what we have :)
